For decades, the audio industry has relied on two pillars: Classical DSP (Digital Signal Processing) and Convolution Reverb. While robust, these methods are static. If you wanted adaptive, intelligent sound, the answer used to be a massive Neural Network running on a cloud GPU—a solution too slow, too expensive, and too latent for real-time audio.
We believe that assumption is fundamentally broken. At Synergy DSP, we didn't just optimize an old process; we created a new paradigm: Generative DSP.
What is Generative DSP?
Generative DSP is our proprietary philosophy that merges the computational power of modern AI with the raw, deterministic speed of DSP primitives.
Instead of trying to replace an entire reverb unit with a slow, memory-intensive neural network, we use our customized NN to solve the hardest part of the problem: The Control Problem.
Our network, powered by the ChromaFlow architecture, acts as a Cognitive Controller that performs three critical functions in real-time:
- Contextual Feature Extraction: The network uses specialized layers to analyze the live audio, extracting unique harmonic and temporal features that a human ear or traditional DSP would miss.
- Generative Output: The network doesn't output audio; it procedurally generates the optimal control parameters (the coefficients) for the underlying DSP engine. For example, our VerbNet doesn't select a decay time—it generates the precise, contextual value for the decay and diffusion parameters on the fly.
- Adaptive Synthesis: The DSP engine (the Reverb unit, Ladder Filter) immediately applies these generated coefficients to synthesize a completely new, adaptive sound field.
The result is a hybrid system: the intelligence of AI married to the efficiency of C++ DSP.
Performance Optimization
This shift is not theoretical—it's a disruptive leap in real-time performance.
The conventional wisdom says that a sequential NN stack with Convolution, RNN, and Attention layers must run on a GPU to avoid latency. We proved that wrong.
By building our ChromaFlow library from scratch in performance-critical C++ using only Eigen for the math—bypassing high-level AI frameworks entirely—we achieved a breakthrough:
This performance solves the most critical bottleneck in Audio AI: the GPU Tax. It allows producers to stack dozens of complex, generative effects without crashing their session.
